Updates on Trent 's movements
Trent's true travels
With a little encouragement from the southerly winds moving up through the continent, Trent powered north covering around 1,068km (663 miles) over the weekend.
Ater crossing the Channel he spent some time in Somerset before moving north again and is currently in the Malverns in Worcestershire. He is around 1km (.6 mile) away from where he was originally caught and tagged in May 2023!
Trent heads for France
Trent has now left the mountains to the west of Madrid, and after skirting around the Spanish capital, has started heading up toward the Pyrenees.
After a journey of around 375km (233 miles) he is now in the autonomous Navarre region just 37km (22 miles) south-west of Pamplona and 72km (44 miles) from the French border.
With southerly airflows forecast in the coming days, Trent and the rest of the tagged Cuckoos in Spain should start heading our way with greater determination!
Trent trucks on
Trent continues his trek north and has covered around 212km (131 miles) in recent days, since leaving the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park area.
He is now in central Iberia, between the small towns of La Higuera and Lanzahita in the Castile and León province.
Trent joins the pack in Spain
As we’d hoped, Trent continued heading northwards through Morocco and he took a relatively short overnight route across the water from Tangier to Spain, arriving just to the west of Tarifa.
Wasting little time, he headed onward and is currently in the foothills to the north of the Sierra Morena range in the Córdoba Province. He has covered approximately 330km (205 miles) since we posted yesterday.
Trent heads to the Med
Trent is continuing his journey through Morocco and having left the area near Rabat, he has moved north-east approximately 190km (118 miles) toward Tangier.
He is just over 40km (24 miles) away from the Straits of Gibraltar so all being well will make his next stop in southern Spain shortly.
Trent makes capital gain
Trent crossed Western Sahara and headed 615km (382 miles) to Sous-Massa National Park just south of Agadir, on the Moroccan coast.
After a short rest and refuel he then carried on, covering a further 450km (279 miles) and is now in a lush agricultural region south of the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
Trent treks north
Trent has now joined the race north, as we'd anticipated. A journey of around 1,450km (900 miles) has taken him from Guinea, through south-west Mali and across much of Mauritania.
He is currently approaching the border of Western Sahara and is on a route that should see him crossing into Morocco soon.
Trent moves north
After lingering in south-eastern Guinea for a few weeks, Trent finally made a signficant move north in recent days and flew 224km (139 miles) to an area close to the Mali border.
He's currently near the River Niger, 47km (29 miles) south-east of the city of Siguiri. Hopefully, he'll be gearing up to cross the Sahara any day now...
Trent nudges North in Guinea
Trent has flown 100km (62 miles) north and west in Guinea so he is now some 25km east of the town of Kerouane in the Kankan region of eastern Guinea. He remains the most westerly of our tagged Cuckoos.
Trent moves into Guinea
After a brief stop in Ivory Coast, Trent has flown a further 382km (237 miles) north-west, taking him over the border into Guinea.
He is now in the south-eastern corner of Guinea, approximately 33km (20 miles) south of the town of Senko.
Trent arrives in Ivory Coast
Since our last update Trent has flown 1,200km (745 miles) west from Nigeria to Ivory Coast. He is now over 2,000km further west than the next nearest tagged Cuckoo, Bluey, currently in Cameroon.
Trent is now just outside of the town of Doukouyo in south-central Ivory Coast.
He will hopefully be finding plenty of food here which will allow him to build up his fat reserves in preparation for the next leg of his journey back to the UK, which will include tackling the mighty Sahara Desert.
Trent moves West into Nigeria
New updates received from Trent's tag early this morning show that he has flown 450km (280 miles) West from his last location in Cameroon to a new location in Nigeria.
He is now approximately 10km south of the town of Okada in Edo State, southern Nigeria.
Trent reaches Cameroon
Cuckoo Trent has flown 693km (431 miles) north west from Gabon to Cameroon, making him our most northerly tagged Cuckoo.
He is now a few miles west of the town of Nguti in south-western Cameroon, halfway between Korup National Park and Bangyang Mbo Protected Area.
Trent continues north in Gabon
Over the last few days Trent has continued moving north in Gabon and has just crossed the mighty Ogooue River.
He is now in a forested area approximately 10km north of the small town of Booué in central Gabon.

He is now in a forested area, 42km (26 miles) north of the town of Koulamoutou, the capital of Ogooué-Lolo Province in east-central Gabon. This is the first leg of Trent's return migration to the UK!
Trent moves north in Angola
Trent moves north in Angola
Trent is still the most southerly of all our Cuckoos, having made it all the way to Angola.
Over recent days he has flown 100km north from his last location, so he is now 85km (52 miles) due east of the capital Luanda. Cuckoos Chris and PJ both visited Angola and are among our longest lived birds, so hopefully, Trent will have the same luck.
Trent moves west in Angola
Over the last couple of days Cuckoo Trent has flown 274km (170 miles) south-west from his last location and is now in the Bengo province of Angola.
He is in a forested area close to the south-eastern edge of Angola's Quiçama National Park, approximately 100 miles south-south-east of the capital Luanga.
Trent moves south in Angola
Over the last few days Trent has been making steady progress south through Angola. He has flown 215km (134 miles), taking him to the north of the Malanje province of northern Angola.
Trent pushes south into Angola
Trent has become the first of our tagged birds to move into Angola this year. Over the last few days he has made a series of short movements south and west, taking him from south-western DRC over the border into north-eastern Angola. He is currently approximately 10km (6.2 miles) south of the town of Quimbele.
Those who have followed the project for longer may recall that for a couple years, northern Angola was the destination of choice for Cuckoo Chris, though he favoured the west, closer to Luanda. It'll be interesting to see where Trent finally settles.

Worcestershire Cuckoo Trent was the third of our Cuckoos to reach the Congo Basin, arriving yesterday (5 October).

This area has seen some heavy rain over the last couple of days which should help ensure a good supply of invertebrate food for Trent.
Trent moving south in Senegal
Trent has continued his journey south through Senegal. He has flown a further 60 km (37 miles) south and is now at the south-eastern corner of the Diambour Forest Reserve in south-eastern Senegal. Clement, one of the very first Cuckoos we tagged, spent some time here on his way south in 2011.
He is also now at the northern edge of the 9,000 sq km Niokolo-Koba National Park. This vast area of woodland savannah, wet woodlands and seasonal wetlands should provide rich pickings for a Cuckoo like Trent.

He is now in a sparsely populated part of the sahelian plains of eastern Senegal, approximately 27 km (17 miles) east of the city of Tambacounda.
It is the height of the rainy season here so there should be abundant invertebrate life for Trent to feast on.
Trent has crossed the Sahara
After several weeks in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Cuckoo Trent has finally embarked on the next stage of his journey south, taking on the mighty Sahara.
He set off on Sunday evening (30 July) and 24 hours later he had covered 1,150 km (714 miles) and was over the desert of Western Mauritania.
He pressed on and appears to have stopped for 36 hours or so in the desert on the eastern edge of the Banc d'Arguin National Park. I must confess to having been a little worried about him during this stop but thankfully, further updates received this morning show that he has flown a further 400 km (248 miles) south, towards Mauritania's border with Senegal.
Since departing his last location in Morocco on Sunday evening, Trent has flown a total of around 1,960 km (1,218 miles) across some of the most remote and desolate terrain on the planet.
He is now some 40 km (24 miles) east of the town of Aleg and 20 km (12.4 miles) north of a large lake, in south-western Mauritania. Hopefully he is able to find some food here to help him on the rest of his journey south into Senegal or Mali.

Trent
Trent was caught close to the village of Ryall in south Worcestershire, at a time when the tagging team had all but given up hope of catching anything that day.
With rain threatening on the evening of 19 May, they spotted a Cuckoo dropping down to the ground near their mist nets as it attempted to avoid a Meadow Pipit, which was mobbing it.
As the team moved in for a closer look, the Cuckoo reappeared and flew straight into their net.
Since being tagged Trent has remained in the same area.
