Engagement

Engagement

As an organisation we seek to inspire and empower people with an understanding of birds and the importance of science and evidence-based knowledge. We are working to provide more and better opportunities for people to contribute to our scientific work, at the same time helping them to learn new things and to grow in confidence as they develop their skills as birdwatchers and survey volunteers.

Opportunities for all

We offer a diverse range of engagement activities, designed to involve individuals of all ages and experience levels in bird monitoring and conservation efforts across the UK. These initiatives not only contribute valuable data to scientific research but also foster a deeper connection between people and nature.

Youth engagement

We place a strong emphasis on involving young people in our work, and in helping them to develop both their birdwatching interests and the skills that will help them in their future careers. Much of this work youth-led by our Youth Representatives.

Working with young people

Community outreach

We actively engage with communities through various outreach programmes, including our Together Through Nature project, and we are working to reach new audiences so that more people can benefit from accessing the natural world.

Building communities

Telling engaging stories

The interface between art, science and culture provides us with opportunities to share our work and to articulate why it matters in new and inspiring ways. Over recent years we have been working closely to engage new audiences through collaborations with artists, writers, poets, storytellers and photojournalists. These projects have brought scientists, BTO volunteers and creatives together, enabling them to co-create amazing narratives of many different kinds.
