Zino's Petrel

Zino's Petrel

Pterodroma madeira

Introduction

Zino's Petrel breeds on Madeira and is Europe's rarest seabird. It is an exceptionally rare visitor to British and Irish waters.

The group of Pterodroma petrels to which Zino's Petrel belongs present a serious identification challenge for birders, but tracking studies have revealed that several of the different species enter our waters.

The addition of Zino's Petrel to the British List came in 2020, when one was watched and photographed just a few kilometres south of Bishop Rock Lighthouse, Isles of Scilly.
