With our expertise in GPS tracking and sound identification, coupled with our extensive datasets, we have been able to develop a suite of tools that form part of our extensive consultancy offering. These include tracking devices, BTO Acoustic Pipeline tools and our Data Reports.
Data Reports
BTO Data Reports provide rigorous scientific information to inform the Ecological Impact Assessment of potential development sites in the UK. Reports collate comprehensive and contemporary bird distribution and abundance data from BTO's high quality ornithological datasets to identify species associated with the site at different spatial scales, and to put these in wider contexts to identify key features.
BTO Data Reports offer a step-change in the information for consultants, their clients and planners. Previously, consultants have had to filter through extracts of thousands of raw records with little supporting information and no wider context. Now, using a GIS file of your site, a BTO Data Report will list all bird species present at or near your site in the breeding season and in winter.
BTO Acoustic Pipeline
The BTO Acoustic Pipeline enables accurate species identification and data management for acoustic monitoring, in conservation, management and site assessment. The Pipeline uses cutting-edge machine learning techniques and cloud computing to automate the processing of audible and ultrasonic audio data, providing a platform that can scale to accommodate acoustic monitoring projects of any size.
Our superior algorithms can identify bats, small mammals, bush-crickets and moths, and we offer bespoke classifiers for several key bird species and groups.
A bespoke service, called Acoustic Pipeline Projects, is ideal for large-scale or commercial use. This service provides extra tools for data management as well as the Pipeline’s species identification capabilities.

Tracking technology
Movetech Telemetry provides cutting-edge tracking devices for scientific research projects, bringing together expertise from BTO and three academic partners: University of East Anglia, University of Lisbon and InBIO Research Network. Our Flyway devices provide an extremely powerful and flexible tracking solution that can be used globally.
Dozens of projects on over 20 species including raptors, storks, gannets, boobies, frigatebirds, bustards and gulls have used our Flyway GPS-GSM devices.
