Birding 101

Birding 101

Over the past few years, many of us have become more connected to nature than ever before - spending time outside on walks, watching birds fly overhead, or listening to their songs. Have you ever wondered what they are or how the changing world impacts them?

BTO’s Youth Representatives started Birding 101 during the pandemic to help young people develop birdwatching skills. Although the series is currently on a break, we hope to bring it back soon.

Birding 101 took participants through the basics of birdwatching, from spotting birds to identifying them by song. Each session included new skills and activities you could try at home, delivered by one of our Youth Representatives. The sessions were a mix of live lessons on Zoom and pre-recorded videos available on YouTube

Participants gained a basic understanding of:

  • How to identify different birds
  • What species to expect in different parts of the country
  • How to encourage birds into your garden
  • The fascinating lives of our common birds
  • How you can help scientists save birds

Keep an eye on our youth events page for other in-person opportunities and updates on when the series will return.

Birding 101 was funded by the Government's Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It was delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.
